How to Stop Diabetes

Millions of people have been diagnosed as having diabetes in the United States. Unfortunately, there are also millions of others that have not been diagnosed, but have this serious disease. Having diabetes can lead to a plethora of complications, such as cardiovascular disease, kidney problems, blindness and in severe cases, amputation of limbs.

Before being diagnosed as having Type II diabetes, most people have a dangerous condition called pre-diabetes for five to ten years. Being overweight and having a family history of diabetes, high blood pressure, low HDL (good) cholesterol or high triglyceride are signals that you are at risk of having pre-diabetes. If you are at risk, you should have your glucose level tested and talk to your doctor about follow-up screenings. If it is discovered that you are a diabetic, the next step is to stop this disease in its tracks. This means that your lifestyle is going to change. Changing your lifestyle is the key to controlling diabetes.

Exercising too little and eating too much can cause diabetes. Controlling your weight is the key to lowering your blood sugar, and also lowers your risk for heart disease. Heart disease is common in people with diabetes. You will not only improve your health with exercise, but you will also feel good about yourself. Your doctor can help you choose the exercise program that is right for you. Most doctors recommend some form of aerobic exercise, such as walking, jogging, aerobic dance or bicycling.

Decreasing carbohydrate intake is important, but sometimes the most difficult. Most people think that a diet with potatoes and bread is healthy, but far from the truth. These foods instantly spike your blood sugar level. People with diabetes can no longer tolerate a heavy load of carbohydrates. Healthy fruits and vegetables, along with whole grain foods, are a must. Eat smaller portions, use low fat dairy products and choose only lean meats.

Start living healthy as soon as possible. Living healthy means that your body will function properly for a long time and fight off diseases. Let's put a stop to diabetes.
