How Seniors Can Stay Fit

Seniors realize that their bones aren’t as strong as they used to be; they don’t have the balance; and their muscles aren’t as toned. This makes exercise more challenging.

Low impact is the best type of exercise for seniors. Low impact exercises are yoga, isometrics, and swimming. The exercises aren’t at all tiring, and will result in stronger muscles.

Isometrics is a low impact exercise for seniors. By using resistance, you can keep your muscles toned. Hold at arms length a book for seven seconds. Then, repeat six times. Or while standing, push against a door jamb.

You can purchase yoga and isometric training video tapes or DVDs. Then, you can exercise in the privacy of your own home.



Swimming is another exercise that is easy on the body. Swimming will strengthen muscles, as well as, increase blood flow and blood circulation.

There are many important reasons to exercise, such as, good night’s sleep. When seniors reach 70 years old and older, having toned muscles become even more important in order to meet the challenges of independent living.

By having an exercise regime, you’ll improve your balance which prevent falls. Also, your cardiovascular health will improve which improves your sense of well-being. You will have the confidence to overcome the challenges of day to day living.

Exercise has been proven to prevent dementia. Your brain requires oxygen, and a good cardiovascular workout will nourish your brain. The goal is to maintain an increased heart rate for 45 minutes four or five days a week by bicycle riding, swimming, or walking.
