Casseroles are flavorful meals cooked in one pot, which makes clean up easy. Casseroles are comfort foods in cold weather, but some of the ingredients, like cheese and white sauces, aren’t really that healthy for you. You can switch the original ingredients with healthier ones.
There are four ingredients in casseroles: starches, protein, sauce, and cheese. Use these substitutions to make healthier casseroles.
These starches can be used instead: pasta, brown rice, bread cubes.
These proteins can be used instead: chicken, beef, sausage, tofu or eggplant (which is a plant protein.)
Sauce substitutes can be: condensed soup, marinara or enchilada sauce
For a cheese substitute use mozzarella cheese.
