Fertilizing Basics

Too much of anything is not good. This is true with fertilizing, as well. Over fertilizing your fruit trees will make the fruit susceptible to brown rot. Too much nitrogen in the feed will result in big leaves at the expense of the fruit. Over feeding your plants will lead to soft growth which attract aphids.

A good fertilizer is kelp in liquid form combined with fish fertilizer. Compost tea is another good liquid fertilizer. You can also work a solid fertilizer compost or rock phosphate into the root zone.
You can spray kelp, compost tea, and fish fertilizer onto your plant leaves in order to give them additional nutrition. Add to the spray no more than ¼ teaspoon per gallon of oil or liquid soap. This will keep pests and insects away. Use an old pair of panty hose to filter out the liquid as you pour it into the spray bottle. Make sure to spray the leaves in the early morning or later in the evening when the sun isn’t shining. You don’t want the liquid to reflect the sun. That could burn the leaves.

Another good fertilizer is Scott's Miracle-Gro. This formula comes is organic and traditional. Add this fertilizer to your watering. When you can actually see the color of the water change color, then you are using too much fertilizer.

When you use fertilizer, your vegetable plants may grow too big of a leaf. This means that you are using too much fertilizer. As a result of using less fertilizer, your leaves will be smaller, but your vegetables will be larger.
